The wind direction arrows on Google maps are so reliable! I was thankful for a tail wind most of today, and a smooth ride into Beyneu, where I will have a rest day after what was a punishing 5 days in the desert. I am staying at the Apha Hotel, which feels like luxury! After the first proper shower in a week, and doing all my laundry by hand, I wandered into town to buy some fruit and vegetables. Beyneu is a sleepy town about 100km north west of the Uzbekistan land border. Both the Police and Google maps say the border to Uzbekistan is closed ... My only option will be to take a train across to Nukus, as trains are the only transport allowed through. I bought my ticket on line, and asked at the railway station about taking my bike on the train. A friendly railway officer told me that I try my luck with the conductor on the day ... No certainty there! I will do as I've been told. After a nice dinner, I settled down to my daily crossword.

If you aren't already using them, we found the apps iOverlander and anything using OpenStreetMaps (i.e. Organic Maps) more reliable then Google, especially for road closures. If you aren't already in it, there is also a WhatsApp group for people cycling around west/central and east Asia called Cycling East, which can give up to date info on road closures etc -- you can join here: https://allmylinks.com/link/out?id=1t2nrw2-2oxm0-zrsg5m
