Tashkent is the only city in Central Asia that has a metro system, and a beautifully decorated one at that! One of the highlights is actually a visit to certain metro stations, which are decorated very lavishly with intricate tilework, chandelier lighting and wall paintings and carvings. I sat on a train, and visited the stations most recommended. I had a list of sights to see, including Kakaldash Madarasa, Chorsu Bazaar, Amir Temur Square, The Independence Fountained monument, Memorial Square, Tashkent City Park, and Navoi Avenue. I managed them all during a leisurely walk for a good few hours. Tashkent is famous for baking bread, and it's bread is soft and delicious! Thick around the edge with a flatter centre, sprinkled with sesame seeds. I have got very used to eating a whole round loaf every night with my shashlik kebab and salad! Tree lined avenues, parks with benches, fountains and plenty of shade and speedy drivers all contribute to the city's character. The people of Tashkent are calm, and shy, and willing to help at any opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed my rest day stroll around this beautiful and unique Central Asian capital city.
