Day 2 - Hranice to Olomouc

In this entry there are 2 maps, as I've accidentally ended the course on my Garmin device prematurely. Map 1 Map 2

Day 2 of this tour was meant to have a relaxed pace. The explanation is that I wanted to end in a "bigger" city (and the Olomouc was the only near by) to be able to get some decent food and buy some stuff if needed — at least that was the plan. Because of the relaxed pace and not a lot of distance to cover, I knew I could take off a bit later, so there was no need to hurry.

I woke up around 6:30, checked the weather, and then went to eat the breakfast served by the guest house at 7:00. The breakfast was good, served with green tea (chosen by me). After breakfast, I packed my things, checked some news on the internet, and around 10:15, I decided to take off.

The weather was good, the temperature was around 11 °C, overcast. At 10:27 (3.1 km), the cycleway started and lasted for a fair amount of time. Not much traffic either, which was good. I really liked this cycleway, which ran alongside the river Bečva. Also, the surface quality was great, as usual in Czechia. I took my time, as I had plenty of time for the day, and was enjoying the ride very much. Around 11:22 (15.3 km), I think I met a couple of bike tourers (judging by the bikes and rear panniers). We saluted each other and continued our paths. I was wondering where they were going and where they would end up today. Ten minutes later, I took a right turn and said goodbye to the cycleway. By this time, the temperature was slowly rising and was around 15 °C. I knew that by the end of the day it could be as high as 21 °C in Olomouc (and it was). So, back to the back-country roads.

My original plan was to have lunch at Osek nad Bečvou, but because I wasn't hungry, I just skipped it. It was also a bit crowded (judging by the cars outside), and I was a little worried about leaving my bike outside, even though I have a lock with me. The first half of the route was flat, not a sign of hills. The second half was a bit different. There were some hills, but nothing fancy. By 12:00 (21 km), the sun was peeking out of the clouds, which was the first sign that the temperature would definitely rise. The first climb started near the village of Veselíčko (which reminded me of the movie "Vesničko má středisková," I don't know why). So, I took off some clothes and ended up only with a long-sleeve merino base layer and a windproof vest (unzipped most of the time, the only time it was zipped was during the descents). At 12:23 (26.3 km) in Lazníky village, I encountered a "No entry" (road closure) sign, and the detour wasn't in my plan. So I stopped at a nearby bus stop to see what my options were. Looking at the map, I found a detour through Lazníčky, which would add no more than a couple of kilometers.

While checking the detour, I ate some snacks and a banana and then continued. During the next climb, I was already sweating, and my Garmin showed a temperature of around 20 °C. In this part of the tour, the road wasn't in the best condition, but on the other hand, the traffic was almost non-existent. That is one of the biggest advantages of backcountry roads: there is a lot less traffic than on the main roads. After a couple of wrong turns, I was nearing Olomouc. One last descent and I was in the village of Velký Týnec, tempted to stop by the grocery shop, but I skipped it as I was planning to go shopping in Olomouc. Finally, at 13:23 (41.6 km), I arrived in Olomouc. And about ten minutes later, I was at my destination, another guest house.

Because of problems with storing the bike inside the garage, I chained it to the fence, but this ruined my plans to go shopping as I didn’t want to leave the bike alone. So I ordered some food (precisely pakor with paneer, shrimps vinadloo and garclic naan x2), took a shower, and washed some items while waiting for it. While I was eating the delivered meal, I realized that I didn’t need any extra supplies, as I still had some snacks, one bread roll, and two cans of food. So there was no need to go shopping, even if I wanted to see the town. Well, maybe next time. After I finished the beer, I booked accommodation for the next days (I almost always book accommodation two days ahead to avoid the nasty surprise of none being available) and went to sleep.

Money spent: 53.76 EUR (Accommodation) + 15.82 EUR (Food)

Today's ride: 43 km (27 miles)
Total: 113 km (70 miles)
