Day 0 - Prelude

This wasn't my first multi-day trip, as I've done a couple of multi-day trips before, but I mostly stayed in my family's accommodations. Here all the nights are in hotels/hostels.

My main plan was to go from Presov (SK) to Prague (CZ), but due to bad weather, I've chosen an alternative route, that is to go by train to Ostrava (CZ) and from there by bike to Prague. I've planned this trip about two months ago, precisely checking the road types, checking with Google Street View whether the roads are suitable and so on. In 95% of cases I've avoid unpaved roads (such as rough gravel) as they could potentially slow me down based on the quality of the road (IF we could talk about "quality" here). The only time I've chosen gravel over a paved road is if I've checked it with Google Street View and knew it was OK to ride on..

I really like planning routes. I've also chosen April because it's not too cold—well, at least it shouldn't be. April weather can be really cold. Originally, I wanted to go to Prague on April 5th via Poland, but it was snowing and the temperature was around 1 °C, so it wasn't a good time to start. So "not too cold" could also mean "the weather could be anything". Accommodation should also be available even on those dates, as it's not the main season in this region. (Easter falls in mid-April this year—but I wanted to be in Prague by then anyway.) So, when the first departure date was canceled, I started watching the forecast for the week ahead (using ventusky.com), and the new departure date was set: April 10th.

The forecast was favorable. On April 11th, no precipitation was expected, with temperatures ranging from 8 °C in the morning to 14 °C in the afternoon. Then, on April 12th, it was expected to be even a bit warmer. Starting April 13th, the daily maximum in the region was forecast to rise from 18 °C to 23 °C by April 17th. However, the forecast also showed a chance of rain on one or more days between April 15th and 18th. So I knew I’d probably have one day off, which would be good for a bit of rest.

On Thursday, April 10th, I arrived in Ostrava, where I had booked a hostel. There, I checked that I had everything I needed (or didn't need) and planned the next day.

I didn’t want to travel heavy, so I had only a pair of rear pannier bags with a total weight of around 15 kg, and a "service" bag on top of the rack. Including my bike, the total weight was about 32 kg.
