Hi Jacquie,
I have also had the opposite problem. A hired bike that was a brute, right at the top end of the size range for me. After that experience I decided to take my own bike whenever I could. It's far better to have the bike that is the ideal size for you.
And here I thought one advantage of going with a commercial tour would be that this wouldn't happen! I've always done my own planning and I think I'll stick with that.
3 years agoBeing small, I have the opposite problem. When people ask why wouldn't I rent a bike "over there" rather than travel with my own from Canada, I say I have a custom touring bike (actually, I now have two) so why would I rent something inferior that didn't fit?
3 years agoThanks, Scott. You'll see that I now have an outline of a route. I hope that my journal will be of sufficient interest for members of the CycleBlaze community.
3 years agoQuite! A bit more planning and preparation wouldn't have gone amiss. I'd have selected something easier for a first attempt at a tour.
3 years agoOh golly yes. We went up and down the flat river routes for years before ever considering the Luberon!
3 years agoThanks, Keith. I have to admit that I am partial to a good Burgundy. Regarding the raclette, I haven't yet faced the problem as typically I would eat this in the early months of the year. Fondue, raclette and tartiflette are all traditional dishes in this area and will present a challenge to me. I think that I'll find a way to indulge in one of them but it will have to be just one exception.
3 years agoThanks Rachael. It was now or never and I decided to make it now.
3 years agoGreat job on the weight loss!
3 years agoHi David,
Well done on the weight loss. What have you done about raclette? Living as I do in Burgundy I would not miss Savoyard wine much, but missing the cheese would be very difficult. I am looking forward to reading about your tour. Let’s hope the vaccine does what one hopes it should and we can all get back to touring by summer.
Cheers,
Keith
Lake Annecy! How wonderful. I can’t wait.

Absolutely agreed! I can't wait to pack up my bike and fly to Europe again.
