Absolutely agreed! I can't wait to pack up my bike and fly to Europe again.

Hi Jacquie,
I have also had the opposite problem. A hired bike that was a brute, right at the top end of the size range for me. After that experience I decided to take my own bike whenever I could. It's far better to have the bike that is the ideal size for you.

And here I thought one advantage of going with a commercial tour would be that this wouldn't happen! I've always done my own planning and I think I'll stick with that.

Being small, I have the opposite problem. When people ask why wouldn't I rent a bike "over there" rather than travel with my own from Canada, I say I have a custom touring bike (actually, I now have two) so why would I rent something inferior that didn't fit?

Thanks, Scott. You'll see that I now have an outline of a route. I hope that my journal will be of sufficient interest for members of the CycleBlaze community.

Quite! A bit more planning and preparation wouldn't have gone amiss. I'd have selected something easier for a first attempt at a tour.

Oh golly yes. We went up and down the flat river routes for years before ever considering the Luberon!

Thanks, Keith. I have to admit that I am partial to a good Burgundy. Regarding the raclette, I haven't yet faced the problem as typically I would eat this in the early months of the year. Fondue, raclette and tartiflette are all traditional dishes in this area and will present a challenge to me. I think that I'll find a way to indulge in one of them but it will have to be just one exception.

Thanks Rachael. It was now or never and I decided to make it now.

Hi David,
Well done on the weight loss. What have you done about raclette? Living as I do in Burgundy I would not miss Savoyard wine much, but missing the cheese would be very difficult. I am looking forward to reading about your tour. Let’s hope the vaccine does what one hopes it should and we can all get back to touring by summer.

Cheers,
Keith
