Your enthusiasm in the description of Barbich was energizing and much welcome from the depths of 2021 lockdown!

Your various references to Keith being asleep as you write the blog reveal a gentle love that many readers may not pick up on. But I have written the same kind of lines more than once, and I know the brief glance over to the sleeping, sick or exhausted partner. Reporting to the readership that they seem to be resting well is comforting as you sit essentially alone with your keyboard.

Hi Steve - thanks for your note. You are so right. I don’t know of anyone who has a cold since covid took over. I would typically catch a cold at least a couple times a year sometimes more. The flue is virtually nonexistent as well. I had the flue a couple years ago resulting in an ambulance ride to the hospital so I take no chances and now get a regular annual flue shot. So keeping apart, wearing masks, hand washing etc. works. It will be nice to get this nonsense behind us so we can get out on the road again across the pond. For now its local riding which we are very fortunate to be able to do between the rain showers. Stay healthy guys !

Reading this from the perspective of 2021, the coughs sound so frightening. One advantage of our current distancing, hand washing routines is that getting a common cold seems a quite remote possibility.

The new blog from David Hobbs about his plans for a brief cycle in Savoie has spurred me to re-read your trip. Here we go!

Thanks Suzanne! The pass was quite nerve racking with no shoulder. Trucks and buses followed by a line of cars came in waves. And the noisy motorcycles to really test the nerves. We waited till we heard no traffic then sprinted to the next pullout. Couldn’t really stop to let them pass because of grade and difficulty of starting again. Thank goodness for the pullouts!

That looks so much nicer than Breton mud!

I’ll bet that’s hot going uphill! And “nature breaks” would be awkward, to say the least.

It was such a surprise to be portaging! I had to make three trips, one with the bike and two more with the panniers. I wasn’t strong enough to stagger across with a pannier in each hand as I had to hold them up high. The chains have had attention here and both bikes will go to our local bike shop for some TLC when we get home. Thanks for the heads up to let them know about the portage. We have so much to learn about bike maintenance, and me much more so than Keith!

We were really pleased with the Ibis. I was hesitant but Keith reminded me you had mentioned them positively in one of your blogs. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay in one again. Especially in an expensive city they will be our fallback. I was worried the room would be teeny but it was a reasonable size and we had everything we needed. We rode by another one on our way into Zurich and a window was open...I could see the room was identical to ours in Bern. They have their formula down pat and they do it well.

What more can you ask for when it starts to rain!

Have you ever got that right! Welcome home. We are sitting in the airport now, victims of my desire to allow way too much time. Who knew security would take all of two minutes? Swiss organization 👍.
