Even though part of me says "leave things be!" I have to ask, do you need a shellfish license there?
2 months agoAbsolutely LOVE this. Mind if I mimic it (whoever designed it)? Kurt, did you really make that after a day of riding?
2 months agoYeah that one's been fertilized. Part of me wants to install one at our place w roof and sitting spot. But sad to say I am feeling more selective about which neighbors I want to invite. Woke up this morning to someone sitting in our lawnchair, someone well beyond acceptable boundaries who definitely tested my neighborliness.
2 months agoMakes me wanna raise llamas. Or goats. Or maybe just host an epic croquet tournament.
2 months agothis pic solidifies my intention to take a day off, climb to Camp Muir and snowboard down while the snow will carry most of the way back to the car. Would invite you to join me, but it seems you're gone for awhile.
2 months agotried (kinda) to read the text thinking there's a good story behind this mural. Sure is nice to be in a place and around people that appreciate the natural/original/aboriginal context of the place they occupy.
2 months agoGonna ride by, knock on their door and ask if they mind if I set up a tent in the back yard. Will offer to catch em a crab in return, but I'm guessing they will offer one up.
2 months agoYeah, spread that message! Much as I love my walk or bike commute to work through Ballard neighborhoods, there's not a day I dont have a close call w someone whipping round corners or through intersections w no signs. I fear for young uns riding on their own, elderly crossing streets etc.
2 months agoGlad things got better. Damn I love that bug! Seen a LOT of driftwood art, but that is right up there near the top.
Your post got me thinking: of the Alone series I've scene, the Vancouver Island episodes seem by far the most challenging, mostly due to the weather. In other words, I hope you fare well. In case you need encouragement (I dont think you do), the show took place November and forward.
When in doubt, pictures tell the story well, though even 100 of your words is better than a picture. Its Amazing what the mind can do to get you going when the going is tough, or the going is uninspiring. Like you, I was haunted/inspired by all the roadside memorials on the coast. Never did write anything about them. My son and I did follow through on our quest to photograph then move any animal carcass we ran into. Ended up buying some dishwashing gloves to keep accessible since we found a lot of work to do along the way.
2 months agoLoved that. Wondering whether $10 for llama dung gets you good fertilizer or cool fuel for your cooking? Starting to worry whether you;ll ever want to return to the states.
2 months agoso so glad you are writing this blog. Not just so I can live vicariously, but so I can copy your plan some day!
2 months agoGlad you included the gear list. Even better would be to dump out my bags next to yours and compare notes. Having never been on that route, I have no idea what's there, but I imagine it's wise to bring more tools and backup bike parts just in case. But then the best part of many adventures is working out of a jam. I hope all your jams are pleasant and lead to fun encounters!
2 months agoFunky!

Huh. Cool move on the bear bin. Did not think of that. You sure packed lighter than I did when heading south. But then you are way smarter in general.
