Would have been easy if the air was lighter

My new cranks finally arrived yesterday and my bike was back in working order again. And just in time. I had thought I’d use the week waiting for them a bit more productively, but the weather just sapped my initiative and interest. So instead of doing touristy things that Costa Rica is famous for I did a lot of reading, coffee drinking, beer drinking and watching YouTube videos instead.   My bike ride, my rules.

Nice to be back on the road. Not yet 80 F, pleasant riding

Volcán Arenal in the distance. I had every intention of visiting it during my down time, but never managed to get out of sloth mode

Stopped in the nice little town of Bagaces for breakfast

New four lane highway out of Liberia, with an excellent shoulder

Not sure what to make of this. There’s not really an alternate road so I ignored it, as did all the roadies on day trips out of Liberia

The cattle is sticking to the shade, as all wise creatures should in this weather

I’ve been using my SIM from Nicaragua but the data was about to run out so I stopped in Cañas to get a new one.

Where I met Naoya. An art teacher from Japan, he’s finishing year one of a three year around the world tour. Japan to Australia and now heading south from Alaska to Ushuaia. We’re in the same WhatsApp group, so we already “knew” about each other

We took a selfie

His Instagram is a lot more entertaining than mine

He’s also faster than me and camping at restaurants so we went our separate ways after our break.

Much better cable management in Costa Rica

And trash cans! It’s different here, the grittiness that I’ve been feeling since entering Guatemala is gone

It looks like The Man had a chat with Marisa’s Fast Food about their sign

Watch out for animals!

I believe this is a bridge for monkeys and other creatures to cross the road

It connects the trees on either side

The Pan American highway reverts back to two lanes and zero shoulder at Limonal, back to tense cycling

I’m staying at the same place I did when I was here in 2011 to work on the seismic station a few miles away. It’s got Starlink, but it’s not working. Norbert Jr. the owner’s son could fix it, but he’s in Liberia

Norbert Sr remembers when I was here working at the station, but doesn’t remember me personally. I didn’t deal with him much then, so it doesn’t surprise me. He’s 59 today, Happy Birthday!

His mango tree is feeding the parrots and the ants. I’ve yet to see any parrots

But I have seen plenty of these
