Day 21 - Beziers to Séte

We did it. Arrived in Séte and finished our trip from the English Channel to the Mediterranean. What a blast it has been. Doug claims to have logged 80 birds he had never seen before. That would explain why he was so dang slow. Doug would claim I spent just as much time taking picture of everything else, but don't believe him.

Here's how the last day went...

Being a short day, we decided to venture further into Beziers first and look at the cathedral. This was easier said than done. Beziers is a maze of twisty medieval streets and alleys, so even if you head the right way, a hundred yards later the road may turn in the wrong direction and take you down a hill you will have to climb back up. We eventually found the cathedral and it was well worth it. Inside was impressive, but we're getting used to that. The bonus was you could climb the bell tower and had a birds eye view of Beziers and the surrounding countryside.

After the cathedral, we spent a fair amount of time trying to get out of the maze. Then it was on to the Canal de Midi which took us most the way to the ocean. After that we cycled along the ocean the rest of the way to Séte. Cycling along the ocean always sounds great, but the ocean attracts summer vacationers, and those attract campgrounds, water parks, amusement parks, rows of tiny vacation huts, tourist shops and so on, and we spent a lot of time cycling by all those things.

Eventually the road cycling gave way to a long stretch on a path along the beach which was nice, but the wind was howling. Thankfully it was not blowing directly at us, but it was not behind us either, rather it was blowing sideways trying to knock us off our bikes.

Séte was nice, there were dozens of restaurants along the waterfront selling fish, so we picked on and ate fish. Tomorrow it's back to Paris by train.

Trying to find the cathedral.

On the Canal de Midi, there were a fair number of what look like old cargo boats converted into very large live aboard canal boats. This is just one example.

Often, riding along the ocean ends up looking like this. I'll take the countryside.

And there was a long stretch of this along a highway. Part of Euro Velo 8.

Then the riding became nice again and there was a long stretch of this. No complaints here except the wind.
