Day 4: Ashland - Bumpass

We set off early feeling a bit off-weather. After a 20 minute ride through some busy roads into the centre of Ashland we stopped at a Panera Bread for some bagels for breakfast. This made me feel a lot better and I think Natalie too. We talked to a few people about our trip in the car park and then set off out of town.

The rural roads today were very nice, and the traffic was low. Lots more hills today though, but we're getting used to these short punchy ones. Most weren't that steep but we did have to walk up one each.

Some turkey vultures set up in a field. Lots of them in the first part of the morning.

We stopped for lunch at a gas station deli outside of Bumpass and chilled for an hour or so. We were just getting ready to set off again and were warned of a thunderstorm incoming.

We had a look at our map. We had been planning on making at least this far, if not to Mineral today, and then onwards to Charlottesville or White Hall tomorrow. We decided to rest up today, so we could have a bigger day tomorrow and make it to Charlottesville.

The thunderstorm ended up being some pretty heavy rain but it only lasted about 20 minutes. But we spent the evening playing cards and watching movies and cooking Mac and Cheese so I think we had a better time by staying still for a bit. We haven't had much time for just resting this trip so far. And it's nice to know we're still on track.

Today's ride: 48 km (30 miles)
Total: 264 km (164 miles)

Rachael AndersonYou have been doing long days carrying a lot of gear so you do need some easier days.
