Sleep in, have a coffee, relax - living like a local: Day 54 - R&R in Zagreb

The title says it all.

The old town of Zagreb is quite compact,  a little rough around the edges, there are no 'must see' sights and locals vastly outnumber the tourists.

Perfect for hanging out on a beautiful fall Saturday.

The city was bustling with life all day. Not crowded but full of people out and about, and of course sitting in cafe's having a smoke, a coffee and usually a very animated conversation with their friend or partner.

We tried to fit right in ... sans the smoke.

Had another extremely good diner at Agava, another M. Michelin recommendation. Superb service (it helps that we are often some of the first people in the restaurant) and Croatian wine recommendations. As we get closer to the coast this place just keeps getting better.

We managed to fill in our short term plan for the next few days. We're going to continue to head to the coast and will stay for two nights in Opatija, an old resort from the Hapsburg era. One of the blurbs we read on it said that it attracted a 'more mature crowd'. Perfect! Once we're there we'll flip a coin to see if we stay on the coast and head to Trieste in Italy before heading to Ljubljana or head directly there.

Song of the Day

Ophelia by the Lumineers

Had this as an earworm all day ... not a bad thing, it's a good song and fits with the laid back feel of the whole day

Local constabulary out keeping the peace

In Buda Pest they only had a hand ... Zagreb's got a whole bishop! Apologies to anyone who may be offended by that comment ... It's just my sense of humor ... and I'm Canadian ... so I have to say sorry

loved these old buildings beside the cathedral right in the main center of town. These look like they are straight out of the 1600's .. just regular maintenance but no major renovation

Nice bike ... wonder if I could fit a Rohloff to it?

Great buskers playing traditional music ... with a contemporary feel to it

Very good restaurant, Agave ... great tables on a series of terraces leading up the hill ... we ate inside though as it is definitely fall. Temps drop considerably once the sun goes down

Typical street scene in Zagreb ... this is at night but it was the same during the day. Cafe's and bars everywhere, most pretty packed with people ... engaged with each other ... note only one person with their face in a phone!

A piece of cool street art we stumbled upon as we stumbled home
