Turning 66 to 99: Day 30 -Teulon to Winnipeg

Manitoba Cycling Association asking the Department of Transport for more paved shoulders

When we woke up this morning we thought we were going to have a quick 66 km run into Winnipeg and then have a nice few days off visiting with kirsten's cousin Leslie and her husband Paul.

After a great Canada day fireworks (good job Teulon!) and a very quiet sleep in the municipal campsite, we were up early and on the road at 8.

First up, Highway 7 south.  100 m out of Teulon, no paved shoulder. And lots of traffic. Nope.

Retreat back to hwy 17 and head east for 15 km and then turn south on highway 8. Still lots of traffic but a metre wide paved shoulder. For 10 km.

Head east again on quiet secondary road to hwy 9. Our last chance. No more south highways, just lake Winnipeg to the east. Turn south, less truck traffic and 50 cm of paved shoulder. Suck it up, thats all you get. Oh, and by the way, you are now going to come into the Winnipeg from the east and we've added 50% to your distance. Buhahahah!!!!!

Silver lining, we went past historic Ft. Gary and we stopped there for an hour. It was great. Without our quest for shoulders we wouldn't have done this.

Made it to Leslie and Paul's place at about 4, got cleaned up, fed watered and had great chats about bands and hockey (ok, great for me, maybe not Kirsten).

Day off tomorrow. Relax, walk around the Peg and update the journal (three days worth).

Heading east (again) on hwy 17. We're getting back into prairie country. We are between Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. The crops are much much better here than what we saw in Alberta and Saskatchewan. They've had some rain here

Trying Hwy 8 south. This lasted for about 15 km... then it was gone. Had to head east again in search of shoulder ... we feel like the explorers looking for the right portage or pass to cross ..

Hwy 9 .... last chance. This is all we've got. It lasted until Winnipeg. This is how you turn 66 km into 99

However, our meanderings led us to Lower Ft. Gary, a national historic site that commemorates the settlement and (western) development of the Red River region, and eventually western Canada
