That's a shame

Day 61 - Senozece to Ljubljana

Slovenia is really impressing! Like I said before, it seems full of really beautiful forests, cute and smart looking villages, and lots of hills and mountains. On top of that everyone has been really friendly and speaks great English!

We had a really nice day cycling the 70 odd kms into Ljubljana, but it would have been even better if it hadn't been pouring with icy rain for the first 5 hours.

We managed to do better than our last freezing rain experience in Spain, where we had to quit after 30kms or so. Sarah now has a rain poncho to wear over her rain coat, and she borrowed my rain trousers. I was wearing some castelli leg warmers which are supposedly some kind of rain resistant, and they did a good job of keeping me warm. Unfortunately, we were both using the same cheap silicon shoe covers as last time, and our feet were quickly soaked. Although maybe a bit warmer than they would otherwise be?

This also means I didn't stop for as many photos, which is really a shame. There is an incredible switch-backing descent near Planina through mountains down into the valley, which was really something.

Luckily we had done the climbing already, and at this point were going down!

We did manage to find exactly what we were looking for, quite late in the day (Slovenia has been lower on cafés per mile than most other places) - an open establishment where we got coffee and a burek, and most importantly, outdoor heating!

Welcome relief.

At this point the rain had about stopped, and there was a pleasant cycle path the last 25km into the city (cyclable road shoulders are another thing missing from Slovenia's repertoire). We immediately had to do laundry, including drying our shoes, had dinner at the Serbian restaurant next door, and didn't get to bed until 10pm.

We had the "Pleskavica special".

While a pretty good day in balance, especially if you ignore the rain, cycling wet for 5 hours doesn't do wonders for overcoming a cold, and now I feel much worse than I did - I really thought I was recovered already! Hopefully it won't last...

Today's ride: 73 km (45 miles)
Total: 2,402 km (1,492 miles)
