jan 15/16- 18 hours to Cha Am

Was soll man schon machen, um den grauslich feuchten kalten Winter, wie er in Wien die Regel ist, zumindest für ein paar Wochen hinter sich zu lassen? Radeln in SO- Asien- was sonst?
Hat sich seit weit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt bewährt, ich kenn mich aus, die Kosten sind überschaubar, das Essen hervorragend, Strand hat es auch, wenn mans einmal brauchen sollte uns falls einem der Sinn nach Kultur steht ist der nächste Tempel garantiert nicht weit entfernt.
Meine Pläne sind nur in Spurenelementen vorhanden, allein zwei Fixpunkte gibt es: nach Ankunft in Bangkok nehm ich den Bus nach Cha Am und ruhe mich drei Tage aus. Am 26. Januar steige ich in den Flieger nach Siem Reap, um zum- ich glaube- siebenten Male die Tempel von Angkor zu besuchen. Der wahre Grund, mich dorthin zu begeben ist allerdings ein anderer als die immer sehenswerten Würdigkeiten: Nämlich ein Treffen mit dem in einschlägigen Kreisen weltbrühmten CRP, Dem „ Cycling Retired Policeman“, auch bekannt als Frankie, dem Jahrzehnte des Dienstes in der Exekutive den Glauben an das Gute im Menschen nicht haben nehmen können.
Am 4. Februar flieg ich retour nach Bangkok und dann- schau ma amoi.

The winter in my hometown Vienna/Austria usually is wet, cold and depressing. What could be better than to cut a few weeks off by cycling in SE Asia? Almost nothing, believe me, I know what I am talking about.
It worked out perfect since more than 15 years. The costs are moderate, the food is excellent, when in mood for beaching there are plenty to choose from and culturalwise the next tempel is never far away- guaranteed.
I did hardly make any plans beforehand. From Bangkok I will take a bus to Cha am where I will relax for three days before I start cycling. January 26 I will board a plane to Siem Reap for the- as far as I remember- seventh visit to the temples of Angkor. But the temples will not be the only attraction. I hope to meet the world famous- when it comes to cycletravels- CRP (cycling retired policeman), also known as Frankie, who has not lost his faith in the goodness of humanity after decades of duty.
4th of February I will fly back to Bangkok an then- we will see…….

Ein guter Zeitpunkt, die kalte Heimat für einige Wochen zu verlassen. One of the reasons to leave cold Austria behind for some weeks

Bislang war ich ja- von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen- der Taiwanesischen EVA Air als neben der Austrian einzigem Anbieter von Flügen nonstop nach Bangkok treu. Mit Thai ist heuer ein neuer Player ins Geschäft eingestiegen. 30 Kilo Freigepäck, keine 158 cm Dimensionsbeschränkung, die Flugzeiten sowie der Preis haben mich überzeugt.

Until today- with only two exemptions- I booked Taiwanese EVA Airlines as the only airline besides Austrian offering nonstop flights to Bangkok. This year a new competor joined the market- Thai Airways. 30 kilo baggage allowance, no 158 cm dimension restriction, better flight schedule and of course the competitive price are convincing.

Selbst bei genauester Planung kann es vorkommen, dass man eine Menge Zeit am Suvarnabhumi totzuschlagen hat. Sollte in so einem Fall ein Hungergefühl sich Bahn brechen, kann guter Rat sehr teuer kommen. Es sei denn, man begibt sich tief hinunter in den Untergrund auf Ebene eins, wo der Pöbeltransport- Public Transport- seine Heimstatt hat. Auf Höhe Gate 8 findet sich ein gut bestückter und wohlfeiler Food Court.

In some situations you cannot avoid to kill time at Suvarnabhumi Airport. In case you get hungry you have the choice to spend tons of bucks for mediocre food but there is a hidden gem in the caverns of the airport on level 1 where ordinary people will get genuine Thai food for reasonable money in the food court next to gate 8.

Nach langer Anreise braucht man doch erst einmal ein wenig Luxus und Ruhe. Das Srisawath Resort bietet solches. Bungalows im Lanna Stil, Garten und Pool. Wiewohl kein Essen angeboten wird liegt das Durchschnittsgewicht der männlichen Gäste bei Kilo 140.

After that long journey one is looking for a litte luxury and piece. Srisawath Resort offers both. Lanna style bungalows and a pool. There is no food available- nontheless the average weight of the male guests is about 140 kilo.

I only keep my fingers crossed you will not have the opportunity to buy another pink Mrs. Kitty bell as a the one that was awaiting me at the Orchid Resort in Bangkok a few years ago..... Ich kann es kaum erwarten in Siem Reap gemeinsam ein paar Tage die Angkor Anlagen zu erkunden, Jan. Nur würde ich gerne auf die neuerliche Überreichung einen pinkfarbenen Mrs Kitty Klingel - wie die, die mich vor einigen Jahren an der Orchid Resort Rezeption erwartete- verzichten. Bei der Gelegenheit natürlich auch lieben Gruss an Gabi in Wien!
